about

Soundscapes is a monthly music thing, showcasing acts from the Canberra region, somewhere in the alternative / experimental / sound art / other / uncategorised zones.

One thread emerging from this month’s pieces is the use of guitar, though the playing style, transformations and contexts vary widely. Besides being musicians, Hewitt and Green are both educators and composers who have worked on a wide range of critically acclaimed projects. This collaboration sees their favoured instruments in mesmeric combination, tracing expansive arcs within alien atmospheres, aided by a considered stereo mix. Ambient Fridge creates a restorative blend of guitar and electronics, but for me the triumph is their thoughtful use of field recordings - at times creating textural drama, at others situating the sounds in a natural environment, and at others providing a slice-of-life. Slow Motion Lion’s other works include nylon string fingerpicking which combines influences from classical guitar, minimalism and progressive rock. Here, rich harmonics of (an imagined?) guitar wash over us in gentle tides. - RI

David Hewitt and Jess Green - Solar Flare / Plasmos
Jess Green (guitars and vocals) has been working with composer and percussionist/vocalist David Hewitt (who resides near Tathra on the far south coast of NSW) for over ten years, within the Musica Viva in Schools group Zeeko, as well as in solo projects. This work is a record of their first collaboration as a duo, and draws on their shared love of trance, the hypnotic rhythms of Africa, and sci-fi otherworldly sounds. Their process involved David creating soundscape worlds to which Jess recorded her responses, and was re-mixed by David. They hope this leads to many more collaborations. www.jessgreen.com.au

Slow Motion Lion - Comis
Slow Motion Lion is a boat. A boat in an ocean, an ocean made of flowers, flowers that grow into turtles and drag themselves ashore once every hundred years to lay their eggs. From these eggs new flowers will bloom. slowmotionlion.bandcamp.com
